New NC Law Unfair To "Dangerous Breeds"

Pet owners, pet care providers, and animal lovers are scrambling to fight a change in the law in North Carolina that would allow certain specified breeds labeled as "dangerous" to be executed after 72 hours in a dog shelter, with no possible opportunity to be adopted. Furthermore a dog turned in by it's owner would be executed ... IMMEDIATELY!!! The breeds of dogs that would fall under this new categorization are ...

DOBERMANS
ROTTWEILERS
CHOWS
GERMAN SHEPHERDS
GREAT DANES
PIT BULLS
MASTIFFS (all bully breeds)
AKITAS
HUSKIES

Pet Care Ft Myers | Tips To Keep Your Pet Cool This Summer

Proper pet care in Ft Myers Florida includes keeping your pet comfortable when the weather turns hot! Humans have the advantage of sweating to help keep themselves cool. The best way dogs and cats cool themselves is by panting. Pets need a little help from their owners during the summer months to prevent the heat from becoming unbearable.

Know the signs of overheating.
Don't leave your pet in your car unattended.
Pets will occasionally knock over their water bowl ... leave a spare ... just in case..
Even if they are having fun ... make sure your pet doesn't over exert himself.
If outdoors ... make sure they have a shady spot to get out of the sun.
If the hot pavement is too hot for your feet ... it's too hot for your pet. Give him ample opportunity to walk in the grass and cool his feet.
When travelling ... even a short trip ... carry water and a dog bowl with you.

Pet sitting Ft Myers

Another good idea is to give your pet a summer haircut. You don't necessarily want to shave your pet, a reasonable amount of fur will help to insulate them from the heat, but too much can work against them. Find a reputable groomer and ask her about a good summer cut for your family pet.

Pet Care Ft Myers | Hurricane Preparedness For Your Pet

In Ft Myers proper care of your pets includes planning in advance for their needs in the event of a hurricane. Any situation or event that presents danger for humans is equally dangerous for our pets, they should never be left behind to fend for themselves, and plans for their needs and comfort should be made well in advance.

Keep in mind when assembling a disaster preparedness kit for your pets that while a hurricane will normally pass through an area in 24 hours, often times electric and water service may be cut off for a week or even longer.

A suitable emergency kit for pets should include ...

A waterproof container to store ...

Photos of your pet.

Proof of current vaccinations.

A description of your pet.

Medications, info on when to give the medications, & medical conditions.

Information regarding any behavioral problems.

Name and phone # of your pets veterinarian.

Records of shots and immunizations.

Feeding schedules.

Your name, phone# (home & cell)

Other necessary items for your emergency kit ...

Food and water to last a week.

Bowls for food and water.

Leashes, cages, and or carriers of adequate size for your pets comfort.

Grooming products.

Blankets, bedding, or towels.

First aid kit.

A hand operated can opener.

Cats need kitty litter and a litter box.

Newspapers.

Paper towels.

Household bleach.

Trash bags.

If it's practical you may consider bringing your pets bed and a few familiar toys.

Birds, reptiles, and small mammals such as gerbils and hamsters should be kept in an adequately sized carrier, and will require an emergency kit much the same as listed above for dogs and cats.

When disaster strikes you will need to know in advance where you are going. It is recommended that you call ahead of time to locate pet friendly hotels, motels, or shelters as many such places do not allow pets, and those that do fill up fast. Your local humane society or emergency management council may have information regarding safe places you can bring your pets to ride out the storm. Compile a list of the names and addresses of pet friendly shelters in the area you would most likely evacuate to as well as your own neighborhood. You may also want to keep a list of kennels, veterinarians, or animal boarding facilities that would be willing to house your pets during an emergency. The more options you are aware of the better off you will be when you need them.

Ft Myers Pet Care | Doggie Beach

Proper care of your pets should include doing new, fun things with your pet. Many of the animal lovers I've encountered in the Ft Myers area enjoy taking their dog to Doggy Beach (also known as the"Lee County Off-Leash Dog Area"), located north of New Pass Bridge right before the Carl Johnson boat ramp. To my knowledge it is the only "off-leash pets permitted" beach in the Ft Myers area.

Pet owners and care takers are expected to keep their pets under control, and pick up after them. Plastic bags and a dog waste disposal bin are on site for the owners use.

RULES FOR DOG OWNERS

OFF LEASH DOES NOT MEAN "OUT OF CONTROL"

DO respect other park visitors both human and canine by keeping your pet from jumping on, or interfering with other people and their pets

DO remember and respect nature. Florida is known for its wild critters, snakes and reptiles.
Respect shore birds

DO keep your dog under voice command and control at all times and stay with your dog.
Keep leash in hand and ready

DO obey all signs and keep dogs in designated areas only.

DO keep our park clean and help decrease the risk of illness by cleaning up after your dogs.
Bags and disposal stations are provided.

DO have proof of license and immunization.

DO leash your dog whenever outside of the off-leash area.

DO only bring a maximum of 2 dogs per individual over age 15.

DO if you smoke, carry out your butts.

DO have a great time!!

DON'T bring puppies less than 4 months old, ill dogs, aggressive dogs, or dogs in heat into the off-leash areas.

DON'T let your dog dig holes

DON'T leave food unattended.

PARK HOURS DAWN TO DUSK

OWNERS ARE LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR DOGS AND ANY INJURIES OR LOSS CAUSED BY THEIR DOGS.

PARK PATROLLED BY ANIMAL SERVICES TO ASSURE COMPLIANCE.

VIOLATORS TO PARK RULES ARE SUBJECT TO REMOVAL FROM THE PARK AND POSSIBLE LEGAL ACTION.

Ft Myers Pet Care | New Gadget Helps Dogs Get Proper Exercise

Pet sitters, dog walking enthusiasts, and anyone that cares for pets are usually interested in any new gadget that comes along that can improve the quality of life for the animals in our lives. I recently encountered one of these "gadgets" and had to give it a try. I found a harness and arm that attach to the frame of your bike, and allow you to walk your dog while riding your bike, keeping your pet a safe distance away from the bicycle wheels and pedals. Not only will our dogs be able to run a little faster, but also, get to run a little farther as their human counterparts will not need to work as hard to keep up! More exercise generally means a healthier pet ... so I thought I'd give it a try.

After attaching the leash I walked him around for about 2 minutes so he could get familiar with the apparatus and we took off riding.

IT WORKED PERFECTLY!

The dog I was walking had a great time trotting along beside me at a pace HE enjoyed while deriving optimum benefit! This apparatus allows me to start off slowly while warming up your dog, bring the session to a peak, and then cool your pet down properly so as to avoid overheating and injury. This makes it much easier to tailor each exercise session to your dogs unique needs and abilities in a relatively short period of time. Not only great for the dog, but, great time management as well!

Ft Myers Pet Care | Pet Quotes

Those who care about pets and animals know the value of having our pets in our lives. Some of the best and most meaningful quotations I've ever heard have been on the subject of pets, pet owners, and animals. Some are funny, some are inspirational, all are worth reading! Hope you enjoy them!

Maurice Maeterlinck

Ogden Nash

"Animals are such agreeable friends - they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms."
George Eliott

"I like pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals."
Sir Winston Churchill

"All of the animals except for man know that the priciple business of life is to enjoy it."
Samuel Butler

"A bird does not sing because he has an answer ... he sings because he has a song"

Ft Myers Man Cares About Pets

I have a friend who is one of those people that care's about his pets the way most people only care for their children. He has 3 dogs, 4 cats, 2 birds, and a ferret. He keeps them all well groomed, he feeds them the best food he can find, he brings them toys, and he makes sure they all get the individual attention they need. Keeping them happy is what makes him the happiest!

As an outside observer it seemed to be a never ending, insurmountable task that took up a significant part of his daily routine. To take care of one pet is a challenge for me, he made taking care of 10 pets look easy! I asked him one day what made him so devoted to his pets. He was more than happy to tell me!

In his 20's, prior to moving to Ft Myers, he lived in upstate New York. One cold winter night, in the middle of a near blizzard, with the temperature around 20 degrees, he and his dog were sitting in front of a nice warm fire ... cozy, quiet, and peaceful. He remembered he hadn't checked his mail, and knew if the snow got much higher he might not be able to for a day or so. He got up from his chair, threw on a jacket and opened the door to go outside and his dog was right there beside him in a flash ... anxious to go with him! My friend looked out the door, then back to the nice soft rug in front of the fireplace, then back to the front door and thought ... "who in the world would want to get up from a cozy spot like that, and head out into a blizzard simply because that is what I'm doing!"
The answer ... "this dog ... thats it!"

His brother? ... Doubtful.

His buddies? ... Not likely.

His Girlfriend? ... No WAY!!!

From that moment forward he started to appreciate the devotion, friendship, and unconditional love he got from his pets, and over a period of time he has gotten better and better at finding ways to return the favor. He claims " everyone knows a pet is a commitment for life, however, it's not just a commitment for the length of their life, but for the quality of their life as well."
