Pugfest VII -- Pug Olympics

Sunday, Jan. 29, noon until 4:00 p.m. Location Bell Tower Shops, corner U.S. 41 and Daniels Parkway, in Fort Myers. Admission is free, but a $5 donation per family is suggested. The PugFest, now in its seventh year, is a dog-friendly fund-raiser for the library system’s annual Southwest Florida Reading Festival. More than 1,500 animal lovers and 500 dogs attended the last event. Presented by the Lee County Library System Proceeds benefit the Lee County Library System’s annual Reading Festival. Funds raised from PugFest VII – Pug Olympics help pay expenses associated with the March 17 Reading Festival, a free community event for southwest Florida residents and visitors.

Fun for the whole family! There will be lots of pet related vendors, resources and demonstrations. Several local rescue shelters will be on site with pets ready to be adopted to loving homes. There will be contests galore such as cutest, ugliest, best dressed pets and more! Come enjoy a variety of food and activities for the kids such as bounce houses and face painting. There will be great items available to bid on at the silent auction. Leashed pets are welcome with proof of vaccinations. Sorry no retractable leashes permitted.

Local animal shelters are overwhelmed with excessive overpopulation throughout the animal rescue system, both government and private organizations are struggling with overcrowding in their facilities and diminishing budgets.

FACTS REGARDING THE SPAYING & NEUTERING OF CATS & DOGS

The ideal age for spaying and neutering is 3 to 5 months?

The #1 cause of death among companion animals is euthanasia.

Dogs are 15 times more prolific and cats are 45 times more prolific than humans.

Neutered dogs live 1 to 3 years longer on average and cats live 3 to 5 years longer.

80% of all fights and animals hit by cars are intact male dogs.

Spayed females do not have heat cycles, therefore males will not be attracted.

Intact female dogs over 6 years of age have a 66% chance of developing pyometra (infected uterus).

Intact male dogs over 6 years of age have a 60% chance of developing prostititis.

Risk of mammary gland tumours, ovarian and/or uterine cancer is reduced or eliminated, especially if done before the first heat cycle.
